UMaine has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 11,500 students. The school accepts 94% of applicants, with a high school GPA of around 3.42 being required. Tuition for the 2022 to 2023 academic year was US\$12,136.00 for local tuition and US\$33,736.00 for domestic tuition.

International Scholarships

Priority Deadlines:

Students need to have a complete undergraduate application on file in order to be considered for all UMaine international scholarships. All students who apply (First Year & Transfer) are considered for merit scholarships if completed before these deadlines:

  • For Spring admission – by November 1 of the previous year
  • For Fall admission – by February 1 of the same year

Students applying after these deadlines will be considered for scholarships as funds are available.

International Presidential Scholarship

The University of Maine offers a limited number of undergraduate International Presidential Scholarships in recognition of outstanding academic performance valued up to US$ 20,000 per academic year.

Who is eligible?

International first-year and transfer undergraduate students are eligible to be considered for this award. Students receiving the Canadian resident tuition rate are not eligible for this award. Sponsored students are not eligible for this award.

How do I apply?

Applicants are considered for this scholarship when their application for admission is reviewed. No additional application is required. Applicants do not need to submit SAT and ACT scores to be considered for this award.

There is no application deadline. Applicants to the University of Maine do not need to submit a separate application to be considered for the award.

Is the award renewed automatically each year?

The award is not renewed automatically each year. Students must maintain full-time enrollment and a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.00 in order for the scholarship to be renewed.  Additionally, the award is for a maximum of 8 semesters (4 academic years) for a student entering as a first-year applicant and 4 semesters (2 academic years) for a transfer student. Recipients of the award must also remain on a non-immigrant student visa F-1 or J-1 to be eligible to hold the scholarship.

Can this award be combined with other scholarships?

No, the International Presidential Scholarship cannot be combined with any other international scholarship. Students are eligible for other UMaine scholarships such as athletic or departmental scholarships.

Maine Global Partner Scholarship

High achieving international students graduating from Maine high schools are considered for this scholarship valued up to US$12,000 per academic year.

International students graduating from Maine high schools and applying to the University of Maine qualify for this scholarship valued up to US$12,000 per academic year.

Who is eligible?

International students graduating from high schools in the state of Maine with a high school CGPA of 3.0 and above. This award is not open to international transfer students. Graduate students are not eligible for this award. Sponsored students are not eligible for this award.

How do I apply?

Applicants are considered for this scholarship when their application for admission is reviewed. No additional application is required.

Who is eligible?

IEI Bridge Scholarship

All international students enrolled in the Bridge program of the Intensive English Institute are eligible for this international scholarship valued up to US$4,000 per academic year.

The Bridge scholarship is valued up to US$4,000 per academic year. All international applicants enrolled in the Bridge program at the Intensive English Institute (IEI). It is applied as a $1,000 scholarship for each IEI session for Fall A, Fall B, Spring A and Spring B.

Who is eligible?

International students enrolled in the Bridge program at the English language instruction at the Intensive English Institute are eligible. Students in the IEI Bridge program are eligible for the IEI Bridge scholarship and not for international academic scholarships (International Presidential, Flagship, Dean’s and Maine Global Partner Scholarship). Graduate students are not eligible for this award. Sponsored students are not eligible for this award.

When are awards made?

Awards are typically made at the time of enrollment or progression into the Bridge program.

Is the award renewed automatically each year?

Students with excellent class attendance and satisfactory academic progress may be considered for a second year of this scholarship. Recipients of the award must also remain on a non-immigrant student visa F-1 or J-1 to be eligible to receive the scholarship.

Are conditionally admitted applicants eligible for other scholarships?

The Bridge Scholarship is a pre-academic scholarship for the Intensive English Institute for ESL or conditionally admitted students. Therefore, students can be awarded an academic scholarship once they matriculate at UMaine and start their full-time academic program. The Bridge scholarship precedes the academic scholarship, and cannot be received at the same time as the academic scholarship.  UMaine offers the following international academic scholarships:

Graduate Student Scholarships

International graduate applicants are considered for graduate funding through graduate assistantships, fellowships and scholarships.

Application Process

  • Complete one of our applications – the Common Application or the ApplyMaine Application.
  • Submit transcripts of all previous secondary/high school or university work (submission requirements by country). In addition, if the document is not in English, submit a certified English translation.
    • We can accept copies of transcripts and test scores submitted by the student to [email protected]. Once admitted, the student will be required to submit official documents to our office before class registration is possible.
  • Submit your English language proficiency test score. See our accepted tests and minimum requirements, as well as our test waiver policy lower on this page.
  • Pay the $50 nonrefundable application fee here
  • Submit a Declaration of Finances along with supporting documents via e-mail to [email protected].
    • If submitted with the application, this form expedites the issuing of the I-20 (immigration document).
  • Submit a copy of passport ID page via e-mail to [email protected].

Deadlines

We operate on rolling admission model and most programs accept and review applications continuously throughout the academic year. However, there are priority application deadlines for maximum scholarship consideration:

  • April 1 for Fall semester entry (late August)
  • November 1 for Spring semester entry (mid-January).

Applications received after these deadlines will be considered for admission and scholarships on availability basis.

Students are encouraged to research estimated visa processing times at the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate offering visa services and plan accordingly.  Please keep in mind that it may take several weeks or months to schedule a visa interview and obtain the student visa.

English Language Requirements

All applicants must request that an official English language proficiency exam score is submitted to UMaine by the testing agency:

  • TOEFL (including the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition) – minimum 
  • score of 79. Click here for test score submission instructions. UMaine’s institution code 3916. Please note: we accept “MyBest Scores” and evaluate these scores the same way we consider superscores for all other tests.
  • TOEFL Essentials – minimum score of 8.5. 
  • IELTS (including the IELTS Indicator online test) – minimum score of 6.5.  Click here for information on submitting your test scores. PTE (Pearson Test of English) – minimum score of 53.CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) – completed level C1 Advanced (Certificate of Advanced English).
  • DET (Duolingo English Test) – minimum score of 110 (effective Spring 2024 semester). Click here for information on submit

  • Test Waiver Policy – we will waive English language test requirement if one of the following applies:
    • Student is a native speaker of English (e.g., American Samoa, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (except Quebec), Dominica, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Grand Cayman, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Trinidad/Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, U.S. Pacific Trust, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines);

    • High school transcript clearly states that English is the language of instruction of all subjects;
    • Student has been studying in the U.S. or Canada for 2 or more years and not in ESL track;
    • Student has successfully passed an English Composition course at a U.S. higher education institution with a grade of C or higher, even if student has not studied in the U.S. for two or more years;
    • Successfully passed the English placement test at UMaine’s Intensive English Institute. 

Conditional Admission

Students who do not meet the language proficiency requirement but have a strong academic record may be admitted conditionally. Conditionally admitted students enroll in the university’s Intensive English Institute for appropriate English coursework until suitable English proficiency is acquired.


Honors College

The University of Maine has an Honors College for students with very strong academic records. Students are automatically considered for the Honors College as part of the Admissions process, and Admission to the College is by invitation.
