The African Oxford Initiative (AfOx) Visiting Fellowship Program is crafted to enable outstanding African researchers to establish international networks and concentrate on a project of their choosing in collaboration with scholars based at Oxford.
University of Oxford AfOx Catalyst Grants offer initial funding to facilitate the development of collaborative research initiatives between researchers affiliated with African research institutions and those at the University of Oxford.

Fellows of the African Oxford Initiative Fellowship will be affiliated with the University of Oxford for 12 months, including ten months of virtual engagement and a two month in-person visit to Oxford between April to June(Trinity term). During the Fellowship, AfOx Fellows are associated with a Department and a College within the University.
A number of the AfOx fellowships are offered in collaboration with key partners at the University of Oxford. These include TORCH, Oxford Department for International Development, The Law Faculty, The Mathematical Institute, The Refugee Studies Centre, the African Studies Centre, Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, Corpus Classical Fellowship and Improving Equitable Access to Healthcare.
Eligibility Requirements for 2024 African Oxford Initiative Fellowship:
To be considered for the program, you must:
- be a national of any African country or have indefinite leave to remain in any African country.
- have a position in an African university/research institution domiciled in an African country and are a legal resident in the host country of your institution.
Benefits of 2024 African Oxford Initiative Fellowship:
Over the course of the 10-month virtual engagement, fellows will be granted remote access to resources offered by Oxford University, including library access, and will receive support in enhancing their research leadership skills.
For the in-person fellowship, selected fellows will be provided with an en-suite, single-occupancy study bedroom. They will be issued a temporary University card for access to University and college buildings, along with temporary membership to the host college’s Senior Common Room for the residency period. The fellowship will also cover the cost of a return economy flight ticket, airport transfer, visa fees, and a maintenance allowance for incidental expenses during the residence (up to £250 per week as per University guidelines).
